RegWise: several control categories in a domain
« on: November 28, 2013, 06:14:49 am »
In RegWise, it is possible to join several management types (control categories) to one domain, and to specify the area extent for each. How are management units assigned to the different control categories?

In short, it's random.

Each control category in the forest domain will be evaluated one at a time. The total area of all the treatment units in the forest domain is calculated and the alotted area for the control category is calculated as the total area * target area%. Then, by picking treatment units not yet assigned to a control category by random, the application will assign treatment units to the first control category. When the selected treatment unit would cause it to exceed the alotted area we are done with the control category and move on to the next one. When only one control category remain, all treatment units yet to be assigned will be assigned to the last control category.

This can cause two simulations with identical settings to yield different results. If this is undesired you can enter a 'Random seed' in the Simulation Dialog. Simulations using the same seed will always net the same results.

FYI: The possibility to set a fixed random seed for the allocation of treatment units to control categories was implemented in version 1.9.8.

It is not yet documented in the help manual.
