Input and output data are stored in two separate databases. The databases are created on a database server. Each of these can be placed either locally, on your PC, or on a server. Often it is best if the output (the result database) is stored on your PC. This requires a local installation of the database server program SQL Server (version 2008 or later). SQL Server is available as a free version, called SQL Server Express. If you also have the input data (the forest database) on your PC you do not have to be online when you run an analysis.

Both the forest database and the result database are created automatically by the program, but requires that you have access rights on the database server to create a new database. A new databases is created when you enter a name on a database that does not yet exist. Databases created in older program versions are updated automatically.

A forest database can also be created from menu Data Management > Create Forest Database. This can useful for an IT-administrator to create a forest database on a server. To create a result database on a server, the IT-administrator or someone with enough access rights must run a simulation in PlanWise or RegWise. It is enough to run a simulation (TPG in PlanWise or simulation in RegWise) for only one stand to create the result database. The simulation results can be deleted after that.

Below are instruction for creating a forest database. See also Create new project.

tog_minusCreate database with input data

Follow the instructions below to create a forest database. After it has been created, you can import data to it that represent the initial forest state, for example by importing a stand register.

1.There are two ways to create a database:
a.By entering a new database name that does not yet exist on the database server. You will be asked if you would like to create it and whether demo data should be included or not.
b.By selecting Create Forest Database from menu Data Management.

skapa_databas

2.Enter the name of the database in the "Server"-field:

Skapa_databas_dlg

Enter LOCALHOST\SQLExpress to create a local database on your PC and you "only" hav the free version of SQL Server called SQL Server Express.
Enter LOCALHOST to create a local database on your PC and have a commercial version of SQL Server.
Enter the server name, like SERVERNAME.DOMAIN.COM to create a databas on a server (requires create-privileges).
3.In most cases you let "Authentication" be set to "Windows Authentication".
4.Check "Include demo data" if you want to include some demonstration data. .
5.Click "OK".
tog_minusProblems that may occur

If you get a problem of the kind "Cannot connect..." it may be due to that your new database server service has not been started. To start it, open Control Panel > Administrative Tools > Local service (or enter "services.msc" in the search box on the Windows Start menu and click Services.msc). Ensure that the service SQL Server (SQLExpress) is running. If not, right-click on it and select Start. Ensure it is set to start automatically.

If you error code 1069 och and the database server does not seem to be running, it may be due to that you have changed your Windows- or AD-password. For the SQL Server-service this may have to be updated manually. Open the services dialog again (see "Cannot connect" above), right-click Server(MSSQLSERVER) or SQL Server(SQLEXPRESS), select "Properties", and then the enter the password in tab "Log on".

When you run SQL Server Express in Windows Vista you must edit database privileges manually: read more here. The problem may also occur if for example an IT-administrator has installed SQL Server for you men forgot to set up your access rights. See step 3 in chapter Install SQL Server:

.

Instructions for how to remove a database can be found in chapter Remove database. You can also delete a database in SQL Server Management Studio:
