User's guide to RegWise

This control table is specific and essential for RegWise. It contains settings for determining harvest levels in scenarios and priority functions for allocating activities to treatment units. Regional Framework is used instead of Treatment Program Generator in PlanWise - while the Treatment Program Generator generates a variety of alternative treatment programs to each treatment unit (to enable optimization) the Regional Frameworks purpose is to "pinpoint" one specific treatment program for each treatment unit. This separates simulation from optimization. Do observe that the pinpointing sometimes involves randomization, meaning that the user then leave some decisions to chance.

Program Restrictions

Management System
Select the management system to be applied: Even-aged, Uneven-aged (CCF), or Unmanaged.
Priority Function Periods
Select the number of five-year periods where the NFI priority functions are to be used.
Random Seed
Treatments are basically assigned in priority order. It is possible to let the system enforce deviation from this order by, with a certain probability, skipping a treatment for a treatment unit and go to the next unit in the priority list. The reason for doing this is to account for non-predictable behaviour, since not all forest owners are following the "management handbook". This means that two identical scenarios (i.e. identical assumptions and input data) will give different results, which sometimes makes conclusions difficult to draw. Setting the random seed to a number larger than 0 will give the same result for two identical scenarios.
Priority Order For Different Treatments
Select the order for which priority functions should be run and treatment generated. This may have a minor importance. Choosing Thinning before Final Felling means that a stand with a high priority for both thinning and final felling, will be considered for thinning as a first option.

Harvest levels

Final Felling Volume (only used if Management System = Even-aged)
Max Annual Volume : Here you can enter fixed harvest levels, if you do not want to using the system to determine this for you.
Max Proportion : Max percentage of total harvest that comes from final felling. Ignored if Max Annual Volume is set.
Max (Total?) Production
Paramaters for empirical function that gives an estimate of the so called Total Production. The output from this function is used to determine harvest levels.
Normal Production
Function parameters for the so called Normal Production. This function is essentially a stand-level growth function. It is not used in growth calculations but only in RegWise to determine the distribution of growth over a rotation. The result is used to determine thinning volume targets based on stand age, in combination with (so far) a pre-defined distribution of the accumulated amount of thinning in a stand at a certain age. Selection Felling Volume (Only used if Management System = CCF)
Max Annual Volume : Here you can enter fixed harvest levels, if you do not want to using the system to determine this for you.
Max Proportion : Max percentage of total harvest that is selection harvested. Only used if Management System = CCF and ignored if Max Annual Volume is set.
Thinning Volume (Only used if Management System = Even-aged)
Max Annual Volume : Here you can enter fixed harvest levels, if you do not want to using the system to determine this for you.
Max Proportion : Max percentage of total harvest that is selection harvested. Ignored if Max Annual Volume is set.
